Validity of the European health card
The European health insurance card is valid for 2 years. During this time, the mutual society member will have medical cover in European countries.
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is the document that proves the holder's right to receive the healthcare services that are necessary, from a medical point of view, in the territory of another European Union Member State and four further European countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland).
The EHIC is valid for two years both for mutual society members and beneficiaries.
A Provisional Substitute Certificate (PSC) will be issued, as a general rule, in a period of up to thirty days. A PSC issued online is valid for 30 days. To obtain one with a longer validity (up to 6 months), you must personally request this from the Provincial Services or Representative Offices. To do this, it is essential to justify (by providing the corresponding documentation) the reasons why this period will be exceeded and why an EHIC application cannot be made.
The validity (expiry date) is printed on the EHIC/PSC. It is advisable to check that it covers the expected return date, if not, it is recommended a new card be requested to ensure cover during the entire stay. Once this period has expired, you will be able to request a new one.
The use of the EHIC/PSC during its validity period also carries the condition that its holder, in other words, the mutual society member or its beneficiaries, maintain this condition during its validity. The holder must bear any healthcare fees if they misuse the card and MUFACE can claim back any unduly paid amounts in accordance with the tenth additional provision of the Consolidated Text of the Law on the Social Security of State Civil Servants, approved by Royal Legislative Decree 4,2000, of 23 June.
