Get a European Health Insurance Card
When travelling within the European Union, you can enjoy the same cover as residents of the country you're in
Travelling is one of life's pleasures, as it enables you to disconnect from your everyday life and get to know new places, cuisines, people and cultures. Travel can help you recharge your batteries and return to your routine full of new experiences that add value to your life.
To avoid any bad experiences, just as you consider taking out insurance to cover potential incidents on your journey such as flight delays or cancellations, lost luggage, etc., it's also a good idea to think about arranging healthcare cover for the period of time you're going to be abroad.
Where can I get a European Health Insurance Card?
To acquire a European Health Insurance Card, go to the Social Security electronic office and, once there, submit your application in the relevant area. Thereafter, the card will be sent to the address you indicate during the application process or, failing that, to the address held on the social security department's database.
The card will feature information about its period of validity, which will be honoured provided the circumstances under which it was obtained remain in effect and the holder will be subject to a fine for misuse.
In which countries can you use the European Health Insurance Card?
If your final destination is within Europe (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden), the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) or Switzerland, the European Health Insurance Card is a resource you can use to help you travel with the peace of mind you need.
The European Health Insurance Card grants the holder and any beneficiaries the same status with respect to healthcare as any resident of the country they travel to. This does not mean that the service you receive will be free, as in some European countries, you might be required to pay an additional amount for certain treatments.
