Loss of the health card
A health insurance card is the way to access the health services of each autonomous community; therefore, it's important to keep it to hand at all times, as you don't know when you might need it
For this reason most people decide to place their health card with their other cards; either credit cards or customer loyalty cards. All of them end up inside your wallet, which is stored in a handbag or your trouser pocket.
Although these are usually safe enough places, and far from the hands of others, you are never totally immune from losing it. In the event of loss of your purse or wallet, the first thing that comes to mind is to call the bank and cancel the credit cards to prevent anyone from accessing your accounts and emptying them.
What to do in the event of losing your health card
Once the credit cards have been cancelled, you need to start thinking about your health card, what procedures you need to follow to request a new card to return your free access to health services to you.
Once the complaint process has been completed, you need to visit your health centre to report the loss or theft of your health card. During this procedure, you will need to provide a document that proves your identity. If the ID or any other supporting documentation was together with the lost or stolen material, you must also report this during your visit to the police so that you can be provided with a temporary document that will serve to prove your identity and be able to carry out the necessary procedures.
If it is not possible to obtain this document for various operational reasons, you can present the police report as proof in order to continue with the procedures.
Health card duplicate
The procedure for requesting a duplicate copy of the health card may vary from one community to another, although as a general rule you will be asked to fill in a form with your personal details and you will most likely be required to pay a fee to obtain a new health card. The amount of this fee will vary depending on the community you live in.
Once these administrative steps have been carried out, the health centre will request a new health card to be issued and you will be informed of the expected delivery time for it to be sent to your house or, on the contrary, whether you need to collect it in person from the health centre.
While you are waiting for your new health card, if you require medical attention, you should indicate that you are expecting your new card. For this you may sometimes need to show a copy of the application for the new card.
