Insurance with traditional Chinese medicine

In some societies, such as in the East, many people use techniques such as acupuncture, alternatives or complements to the indications of medical professionals. Can they be included in our health insurance?

More and more people, in addition to finding solutions in traditional medicine, use other traditional medicine services to overcome their ailments. This means we are seeing an increase in insurance firms being asked about insurance policies that include traditional Chinese medicine

Acupuncture is one of the best known alternative techniques. This traditional Eastern therapy, part of traditional Chinese medicine, dates back more than 2000 years, and is used to alleviate different pains.

This treatment consists in stimulating different points of the body with very thin needles, which are introduced gently into the patient's body to alleviate chronic pain in particular.

Does my insurance include traditional Chinese medicine?

The main reasons for taking out an insurance policy tend to be access to a medical directory that you can go to as quickly as possible when you need it, and avoiding the waiting lists of public health care.

Other important aspects that make us choose one type of health insurance over another is the kind of cover the insurance company offers. There are more and more insurers offering the ability to customise our insurance policy with the cover that we think we need to look after our health.

As we have mentioned, there are people that trust in alternative therapies and ask for traditional Chinese medicine insurance, which allow them to complement conventional treatment with alternative treatments, including acupuncture, homeopathy, mesotherapy, osteopathy, etc.

Another resource used by insurance firms is the reimbursement of expenses spent on sessions that use these therapies. The amount of the reimbursement and the number of sessions that you can have reimbursed will depend on what is specified in the general terms and conditions of each policy in each insurance company.

If you are thinking about taking out an insurance that offers traditional Chinese medicine, the best advice is to contact the company you want to take out the policy with and ask them for all the information you need to make the best decision according to your needs.
